INFINITE SADNESS | APMAP2017
Seopseom is an uninhabited bedrock islet that serves as the background for the tale of a giant crimson snake with ears that creates thick fog bearing malice after it dies in the sea after failing in achieving its dream of becoming a dragon. A kind of granite called ‘tan brown’ whose color is reddish is processed into curved cylinders, which are then arranged on the grass of OSULLOC Tea Museum to form a curvilinear line, evoking a snake, installed in the outdoors, Infinite Sadness(2017) provides a nice place of rest on which can sit.
APMAP 2017 jeju - mystic birth
Part II of the Amorepacific Museum of Art Project (APMAP) consists of four exhibitions to be held annually in Jeju Island from 2017 to 2020, respectively. The goal of the project is to unveil the true nature of Jeju Island by communicating with many people about different topics, including the origins of the island, the lives of the people, and local art. One of the primary goals is to highlight Jeju’s singular status as a place for appreciating contemporary art in harmony with unique natural wonders, transcending the island’s usual context as a mere tourist site. The first exhibition, held at Osulloc Tea Museum in Jeju, is entitled mystic birth, and it explores the fascinating myths and folklore surrounding the island’s provenance.
The sixteen participating artists and teams traveled throughout Jeju in search of local myths and tales, and then produced diverse contemporary artworks based on their discoveries. Handed down for generations, many of these legends tell different versions of the birth of Jeju Island, while also conveying the core values of island dwellers who have spent their lives apart from the mainland. Allowing visitors to experience different places related to the island’s birth, this exhibition places Jeju and the museum within a new perspective.
