| Beginning of New Era 22 October to 6 December, 2009 KIMUSA (The old Defence Security Command Site) |
||||
![]() |
The old headquarters of Defense Security Command that was closed to the public, will be reborn as a National Museum of Seoul. To celebrate the beginning of the new era, MOCA will have the first exhibition of beginning of New Era through which it introduces the works of established artists, emerging artists, fine artists, architects, designers, applied artists, movie directors and others from different generations and genres. This reflects the desire that the culture of art that the new museum exhibits is refreshing, fun and new. New Era seems to successfully encourage the exchanges between different generations and genres. It is hoped that the new museum that has taken a step closer to the daily lives of the public, will bring about more creative, dynamic and diverse perspectives in the artistic environment of Korea. Space Project Artists in the old DSC headquarters re-interpreted the space in freer and diverse manners to highlight the history of the building, what it means to the Korean society as well as the space per se and materials used in the space. The artists employ four distinctive styles of work: reuse or rearrange the materials used for the building and the site, insert unique objects into the space, promote communication between the interior and exterior spaces, and use specific sites as dubious space which is mixed in real and virtual world. |

| 12 Prototypes July 22 to August 4, 2009 Dukwon Gallery, Seoul, Korea |
||||
![]() |
The aim of 12 Prototypes is to combine the ever changing furniture design trend with a new culture style to present a diversity of furniture objet. Such movement is already active both in the domestic and international world of design. This exhibition is on the same context. 12 Prototypes is participated by twelve emerging designers. It starts with a simple example, which is then analyzed from a more profound point of view and tells the story of a new furniture design that has begun the first step as a new form. The exhibition doesn¡¯t limit itself to the general values of the past and the contemporary but attempts at the extension to the new territory. It attaches significance on the integration with new culture, the varied presentations of the inside stories, and the value of the visual formativeness and also approaches, in a light yet intricate manner, the potentiality in presenting furniture design and the artistic value that transcends the function of furniture. 12 prototypes do not draw the line between furniture and art. Rather, it constantly tries to blur the boundary. Although its driving force is furniture, the artistic value is also noted. What the exhibition seeks for in furniture design is storytelling. Serving its original purpose, the furniture is brought to life by the stories that justify its existence. Dukwon Gallery |
